“We specialize in the wholly impossible.” This was the motto of the National Training School for Women and Girls, which Nannie Helen Burroughs opened in Washington, D.C., in 1909 to educate Black women and girls for skilled, self-sufficient work. In 1920 she founded the National Association of Wage Earners to improve wages and working conditions for domestic workers.

Macro Pathways carries her spirit into social work. Building institutions where none exist, and organizing for workers others overlook, is the work of people who refuse to accept what everyone else calls impossible.

Part of the Macro Pathways Portrait Series, honoring figures whose words still move the work forward.
