“We specialize in the wholly impossible.” This was the motto of the National Training School for Women and Girls, which Nannie Helen Burroughs opened in Washington, D.C., in 1909 to educate Black women and girls for skilled, self-sufficient work. In 1920 she founded the National Association of Wage Earners to improve wages and working conditions for domestic workers.
