“We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country.” Abraham Lincoln wrote these words in his Annual Message to Congress on December 1, 1862, in the middle of the Civil War. He was asking a nation to let go of the dogmas of a quieter past so it could meet a stormy present.

Macro Pathways carries that call into social work. Disenthralling ourselves means questioning the assumptions that funnel social workers into a single path and claiming the full reach of the profession, from systems to culture.

Part of the Macro Pathways Portrait Series, honoring figures whose words still move the work forward.
