“If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” Frederick Douglass spoke these words on August 3, 1857, in his West India Emancipation speech in Canandaigua, New York. He went on to say that those who claim to favor freedom yet reject agitation want crops without plowing up the ground.

Macro Pathways carries that conviction into social work. Systems rarely change on their own. Progress comes from people willing to organize, advocate, and push on the structures that shape everyday life.

Part of the Macro Pathways Portrait Series, honoring figures whose words still move the work forward.
